Visibility Where You Live

Local search is exactly what it sounds like – the ability for patients to find businesses and service providers in their local area. The rise of local search capabilities stems directly from a shift in consumer habits. Once, it was normal for patients to shop with any provider that met their needs in terms of price and shipping time.

However, today’s consumers are using the Internet in different ways

More and more frequently, consumers are using the Internet for research purposes. They’re looking up products and service providers in their local area, learning more about them and using that information to shop around their local area. Obviously, that has enormous ramifications for your practice. How do you take advantage of this new trend, though?

There are several ways that you can turn the new local search trend to your advantage, but one of the best (not to mention FREE) is Google Places. Places offers you the means to put more information about your practice online, through actual search results. It allows you to put in a description of your practice, using keywords, as well as a picture of your practice and a location in Google Maps.

Google Places appears first in search results

For example, if your practice was located in Mobile, Alabama and a consumer searched for “teeth cleaning Mobile,” then your search results would be displayed at the top of the page. Local results truly are immensely powerful.

The Influence of Social Media

When it comes to social media…

  • 94% of the respondents answered that they prefer Facebook, while 32% named YouTube and only 18% said MySpace.
  • 1 in 2 respondents trust the website of the health provider, and 1 in 4 say that they are very likely to choose their health care based upon opinions stated on social media sites.
  • Respondents around age 41 prefer social media information.
  • A current survey made by National Research Corporation states that one in five Americans use social media resources to find health information and advice.
  • A study by Intuit Health shows that Americans expect their physicians to be easily accessible online.

  • When it comes to secure online services…

  • As Americans trust online payments 73% of the responders would agree to use an online secure solution to pay medical bills, communicate with their doctor and even receive medical test results.
  • Around 50% of the respondents said that they would be interested in changing their doctor for one that can offer them more access to online services.
  • The same survey shows that almost 20% of American patients can’t reach their doctor in an efficient way to obtain medical information or make an appointment.
  • 81% of the respondents would be comfortable with online medical registration and would share their medical history if they could use a secure online service.

  • Health information is hot…

  • About 85% of Americans use the internet to research everything regarding their health: diseases, symptoms, medical insurance, medical facilities and remedies. This data was announced in February 2011.
  • Another Pew Internet Project survey stated in June 2009 that around 60% of the American adults were researching health issues on the Internet.

  • I think we can all agree that your patients are Internet savvy, interested in research their options, and appreciate your online efforts…

Syndicate Your Video All At Once!

If you have shot a bunch of videos and you’re looking to syndicate those and get those out all across the internet on the different video sites, Vimeo and YouTube, and start building backlinks into your website, make sure that you’re syndicating those all at once. A lot of guys have a tendency to drip them out and they think that their prospects might be lured in if they say, ‘I’ll give you one, come back next week I’ll give you the other one.’ What we find is quite the opposite. People that are in this digital era have this digital attention deficit disorder, they have this instant gratification need. They want to look at all your stuff, they want to find out and make a decision right now if you’re right for them. We recommend you syndicate all of them, blast them out all at once, give them everything you’ve got and do that regularly so you’re constantly building up that reputation, those backlinks and that SEO ranking for your videos and your website.

California Stops Automatic Delivery of the Phone Book

Just weeks after San Francisco passed a law stopping the automatic delivery of telephone books, California regulators approved Verizon’s request to end deliveries of printed white pages statewide.

The decision to go digital with residential listings is expected to save an estimated 1,870 tons of material from California’s waste stream.

The California Public Utilities Commission granted Verizon’s request to provide customers with an online, electronic version of the white pages. Customers also can continue to receive the traditional printed volume by request. Or they can request a free CD-ROM directory of residential listings.

How long do you think it will be until the rest of the states follow suit?

    AOL Keyword: SmartBox

Staying on top of current internet trends and marketing tactics, we’re excited to announce that we’re now easily found via AOL Keyword SmartBox!

Wait. Stop. Hold up. This is 2011, not 1999.

At one point, this was THE linchpin in EVERY successful internet marketer’s play book. Nowadays, I don’t even know anyone who uses AOL, let alone their keywords.

Although a very dramatic example of a change in marketing tactics, trends and algorithms are in a constant state of flux these days. If you’re still handling your web marketing like you did in 2005, or even 2010, you will be left behind very quickly.

Google’s major December 2010 update, dubbed “Panda,” has completely changed the game (and continues to). No longer is it good enough to just throw up a website with good content. You must update your site regularly with unique & compelling content, you must have video, and you must be mobile.

The early adopters in any marketing trend – be it AOL keywords, Overture, AdWords, Local Search, Video SEO, or Mobile Marketing – always have a leg up on the rest of the herd (who eternally play catch-up).

It used to be that the Yellow Pages was the only way for doctors to advertise their services. That time is long gone and nowadays not only do you waste your money that way, you won’t get well targeted or qualified leads because less than 5% of those searching for a dentist use the Yellow Pages. Give Smartbox a call today to learn about how we can position you in the local marketplace as the only dentist to call.

3 Cups of Tea? I’ll take Twelve, Please.

Have you ever wondered what it was that finally made a prospect call your office and become a new patient? We can talk about how newspaper ads might or might not have convinced people to call, how effective radio spots were or even the numbers of clicks we got on our websites. We might even be able to point to a particular “hot button” procedure we discussed on a blog or in a video and claim it pulled in calls really well.

All too often when we try to duplicate the success of a previous ad or the video, and we find the potential new patients have suddenly disappeared. The response rates drop way off and the calls cease. So what is it — What is the magic wand that makes people call?

The National Sales Executive Association would say it isn’t any one thing. Yes, some ads pull better than others. Some mediums are more in touch with the public, such as videos and websites. But to see the big picture of marketing your practice you have to understand the buying public. These statistics tell it all:

  • 2% of sales are made on the 1st contact
  • 3% of sales are made on the 2nd contact
  • 5% of sales are made on the 3rd contact
  • 10% of sales are made on the 4th contact
  • 80% of sales are made on the 5th-12th contact
  •

That last statistic tells the story

You always should know the rate of return for every ad or promotion, and thanks to our Zetetics™ now you can. You always should be testing your ads to constantly improve their performance so your advertising budget continually works harder for you. But the number one way to increase your conversions (get those calls to your office) is through multiple contacts with potential patients. Eighty percent of conversions happen on the 5th to 12th contact you have with the individual… 80%!

That means that if you think you are going to get someone to call your office by inviting them to your website with a newspaper ad (two contacts), and that’s all you have to do, you are missing 90%-95% of your potentially new patients. If you are sending out a direct mail piece with brochures and fliers and expect John or Jane Public to call, forget it. On average the person will only respond after they have heard, seen or viewed you 5-10 times.

Your marketing has to be more interactive and progressive than ever before

Thanks in large part to the internet, the public is more prone to “shop and compare” than ever before. They cannot be swayed with one contact; a newspaper ad or a radio spot. They shop, they dig deep finding information and to some degree they are distrustful of “one hit wonders” – those that are seen or viewed once and then go away. But when you figure out a way to keep dripping information to prospects in a multitude of ways, your phone will start to ring.

That may seem like a lot of work – contacting someone 12 times – but SmartBox can automate the process for you. The “drip marketing” we offer will continually put your chosen message in front of potential patients.

And what will be the return on your investment when you get in front of the public that many times? How much could you expect to increase your closing rate if you sent out four emails, for instance? About 173%, or if you increased those contacts to eight you’d enjoy a 400% greater response rate, according to E-Marketing Today. That’s not a bad return for a little more effort that can be automated. Contact us to learn about how we can automate your follow-up for you.

    Getting to know your ROI

One of the problems with traditional advertising whether it is in the newspaper, on the radio or even on the web is that very few businesses really know how well these media perform. It is hard to know whether a particular ad in a newspaper actually gave you two new patients, four, or if it brought in any at all. You can put enticements in the ads that ask people to mention something when they come into the office or bring in a “coupon code”, but most don’t and most office staff doesn’t want to appear pushy when asking for details about such things.

This becomes very frustrating for most dentists and in the long run it can be very expensive. If you don’t know which ad works and from which medium, how do you know if your advertising dollars are doing their job? Furthermore, if you do stumble upon an ad that really pulls in patients you might inadvertently cancel it because you didn’t know its effectiveness. Not knowing your advertising effectiveness will always mean you are wasting money on poorly performing ads and you’ll never have a chance to improve things.

Imagine that a marketing campaign with a good sales copy drew 100 clicks and 10 calls to your office

Armed with that knowledge you now would have a “control” ad that could be slightly rewritten and tested. If during the second campaign your ad pulled 12 calls into your office you’d know you were headed in the right direction. If it only pulled 8 calls into your office you’d want to go back to the original ad and try again. Of course the goal is to constantly upgrade the conversion rate (calls to your office) and through scientific testing and rewriting always strive for a better ROI.

With web campaigns you can usually view the number of page views, but calls to your office are what really count

This is where the real money is. With print or radio advertising you rarely have a way to judge the effectiveness of your advertising dollars as a new patient call could come as the result of newspaper ads, radio ads, word of mouth, direct mail or anything else you might be doing at the time.

Several years ago SmartBox Web Marketing launched Zetetics™. This is a tracking system that assigns a phone number to ads in different media you might run. The software then tracks calls on a number supplied through Zetetics™ so that you will know exactly what ad is converting at what rate. It can be used with any advertising and even your website.

Zetetics™ is perfect for dentists when clicks on a website or views in a newspaper tell them little without corresponding calls to their office. Dentists love it because it proves beyond a shadow of a doubt whether any ad is working or not working, and it can eliminate wasteful spending on advertising. It can conversely improve their ROI as they strive to better their marketing. They also like the ability it has to monitor calls for quality assurance purposes as each call to a Zetetics™ phone number is recorded as an MP3. Dentists can listen to staff/patient interactions and reasons for a patient call at their leisure.

We are pleased to announce that Zetetics™ phone tracking will no longer be an option but a built in feature of every web project we do. You will know exactly how your web campaign, site optimization and the work we do for you is improving your business.

Your practice design – a good marketing tool

I’m not talking about web design (not today at least). I challenge you to think about your dental practice’s design. Newly built offices between January 1, 2008 and December 31, 2010 are eligible to enter the 12th annual Dental Office Design Competition. The big prize is the publicity to be recognized as one of the best practices in the country. You can register here before July 31, 2011.

The grand prize is the “Dental Office Design of the Year”. The winner will be selected from all the practices – no matter the group category. There are also several more Outstanding Achievement awards that will be given out.

The winners will be announced at the ADA Annual Session in October 2011. This competition is not the only reason that you should start to think about your practice. At the International Association of Dental Research 89th General Session and Exhibition, a survey conducted on 5406 patients that visited the 197 practices from the Dental Practice-Based Research Network offered interesting results.

The general conclusion is that patients prefer practices with more chairs and private practice offices. Even if I am not a specialist in interior design, I do believe that a well decorated practice is a powerful marketing tool. Your practice should be modern but comfortable, and must help you patients relax. A simple and practical design is paramount.

    Google +1: Know Your Demographics

Google yesterday released their much anticipated Google +1, which is similar to Facebook’s “Like” button.. sort of. Let me explain.

Google +1 is a social activity and sharing feature. Just like you can click on Facebook’s Like button and share an article, blog, or website with your Facebook friends, now too you can click +1 and share it through Google.

Google’s new +1 Button, which you can add to any page on your website or blog just like a Facebook Like button, gives you the advantage of a few killer features:

  • Geography: you will learn where +1 activity is happening
  • Demographics: Google will share the age/gender of who’s clicking +1 on content
  • Content: +1′s will be reported on a URL-by-URL basis
  • Search impact: webmasters will be able to see +1 impressions, clicks and click-thru rates

  • I think it would be ridiculous to think that Google will not begin using these “social analytics” in determining ranking order within the search results. Moreover, with the major internet players building enormous databases of a visitors information, preferences, and habits, you can bank on this data being used to hone and target advertising in the future.

And when I talk about the future of the internet, I’m talking about in the next weeks and months — not years and decades.
